Answer: Letter from Manfred Kielnhofer, occupy Kassel, Waechter der Zeit to documenta und Museum Fridericianum
Sehr geehrter Herr Bernd Leifeld,
Danke für Ihr Schreiben.
Die Wächter der Zeit treten für Umweltschutz und mehr Gerechtigkeit auf dieser Welt ein.
Ich hatte im Oktober 2011 den ersten Kontakt mit den Occupy- Aktivisten in Berlin. Damals hatte ich die Skulpturen für das Festival of Lights in mitten der beginnenden Occupy- Demo vor dem Reichstag in Berlin präsentiert. Dadurch hat sich auch die Sympathie zum Occupy Kassel Camp ergeben.
Ich bin sehr stolz, dass die Kasseler Aktivisten die Wächter aufgenommen haben.
Die “gesichtslosen Skulpturen” werden in Kürze, so wie die Anonymusmasken als Symbol für den weltweiten kommenden Umbruch stehen.
Die “Wächter der Zeit” nützen wie “Eva und Adele” den Eyecatcher Effekt zur Übermittlung einer Botschaft.
Letztes Jahr hatte ich zur Documenta- Leitung geschrieben, dass die Wächter sowieso nach Kassel kommen, mit oder ohne Einladung. Es ist bei allen Fotos und bei jeder Veröffentlichung “Occupy”, “Occupy Kassel” oder “die Wächter als Besucher” von mir deutlich angeführt.
Jeder andere Anschein oder Eindruck ist nicht gewollt.
Es würde mich sehr freuen, wenn sie die Occupy- Organisation weiter unterstützen, wie bisher.

die Kunstausstellung dOCUMENTA (13) ist eine kuratierte Ausstellung, deren künstlerische Leiterin Frau Christov-Barkargiev ist. die teilnehmenden Künstler sind von der künstlerischen Leiterin zur dOCUMENTA (13) eingeladen, Ihren beiden Bewerbungen wurden mit Email vom 06.06 and 14.12.11 von Frau Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev abgelehnt.
Die documenta and Museum Fridericianum Veranstaltungs-GmbH respektiert jede künstlerische Arbeit. Wir können jedoch zum Schutz unserer eingeladenen Künstler und insbesondere zum Schutz unserer kuratierten Ausstellung die Teilnahme an nicht eingeladenen Künstlern nicht zulassen. Durch das Aufstellen Ihrer Wächter auf dem Friedrichsplatz in Kassel und Ihrer Aussage, das Occupy Camp habe sich um Ihre Wächter herum gebildet, haben Sie den Eindruck erweckt, Teil dieser Ausstellung zu sein. Das entspricht nicht den Tatsachen.
Aus diesem Grund fordern wir Sie auf, zukünftig weitere Aufstellungen Ihrer Wächter oder sonstige Projekte auf der Ausstellungsfläche der dOCUMENTA (13) zu unterlassen, ebenso alle weiteren Äußerungen, die den Anschein erwecken, dass Sie jemals Künstler der dOCUMENTA (13) sind oder waren.

Die Wächter der Zeit von Manfred Kielnhofer sind seit dem ersten Tag am Friedrichsplatz ausgestellt und wurden von der Documentaleiterin Carolyn Christov-Barkargiev akzeptiert und werden die gesamten 100 Tage in der Organisation der Occupy Kassel verbleiben.
OCCUPY
Sind Kunstausstellungen politische Orte? Zumindest Vertreter der Occupy-Bewegung scheinen die Umgebung zeitgenössischer Großausstellungen als geeignete Aktionsräume zu schätzen. Waren sie bei der kürzlich zu Ende gehenden 7. Berlin Biennale sogar als offizielle Teilnehmer eingeladen, haben sich die Aktivisten inzwischen auch auf dem Friedrichsplatz eingefunden. In einer nächtlichen Aktion bauten die Protestler von Occupy hier eine Zelt-Installation auf. Weiße Planen, bedruckt mit den Leitwörtern der Kapitalismus-Kritiker: Gier, Hochmut, Neid, Geiz. Wie bekannt gab es ja im Vorfeld Streit um die Benutzung des Platzes und seines Umraums im Rahmen der Documenta (13): Carolyn Christoph-Barkargiev beanspruchte ihn als gewissermaßen als Hoheitsgebiet der Großausstellung. Im Falle der Occupy-Bewegung zeigte sie sich jedoch verständnisvoll und großzügig und erlaubte auch dem Künstler Manfred Kielnhofer, seine rot verschleierten “Wächter der Zeit” aufzustellen:

The Guardians of Time Occupy Kassel, Documenta City contemporary art show
It sounds like a title of a old episode of Star Trek, but the town of Kassel in Germany has been invaded by a group of figures known as the Guardians of Time. Kassel holds an art exhibition every five years but despite an offer from the artist the Guardians of Time were not invited. Yet, these mysterious beings do not, it seems, need a summons from mortals. They chose to walk where they wish.
The artist, Manfred Kielnhofer, a world renowned Austrian painter, sculptor and Photographer, did indeed offer his work to the Kassel art exhibition, known as Documenta (now in its 13th installation as it were). Yet for whatever reason his proposal was turned down.
Instead, the sculpture was installed on Friedrichsplatz in the ‘Occupy Kassel’ camp after curators rejected the artists wish to have it included in the exhibition – which includes over 300 exhibitions by artists from all over the World.
301 if you include Kielnhofer, pictured left, who is according to certain Kuriositas ladies the best looking artist on the planet. Objectifying the artist aside, the Guardians will be on site until the end of the art festival which concludes on 16th September 2012 and will spend their time traveling around the vast Documenta area, popping up at the numerous venues spread across the city.
The Guardians of Time take the form of empty, sometimes illuminated shells which take a form akin to a monk (though, of course, that is open to your interpretation). They have been place on the Friedrichsplatz so that they can be seen by all who visit the festival but they have been seen all around the town.
The Guardians may look a little daunting, scary even. Yet never judge by appearances. They have a somewhat subversive sense of humor.
Tourists and dogs alike seem to love them – but silliness aside they do have a message.
Kielnhofer created these starched resin and fabric cases and asked the world to make of them what it would for a reason. It is a call to people to make a change and to live with thought, with steady deliberation. The Guardians of Time ask people to remember things which are not forgotten but are not spoken about. They form, as should we, a type of gestalt of remembrance.

The Guardians of Time by Manfred Kielnhofer are issued in the Documenta city Kassel. You can see the mystical sculptures on different public places in the Docuementa city for 100 days. Most of the images were made on Friedrichsplatz in the “Occupy Kassel” camp.
